Character's Background
Marika is a high school student on a planet colonized from Earth in the Tau Ceti system who inherits a pirate ship, a letter of marque which is valid as long as she is in command of that ship, and an instinct for command. From there she leverages every advantage she can get her hands on, from the experience of her crew, to her school friends, to family contacts, towards her goals at any time. Mostly keeping her freedom in space, but also fighting anyone who would restrict her friends from doing what they wanted too.
She works hard at everything that she does and is loath to drop any of her friends or responsibilities. This leads to her over working herself fairly regularly, and she would do it more if she wasn't stopped by her older crew. Marika will throw herself into fights that she thinks are important, and she is aggressive, but she fights smart. The first upgrade she put on the Bentenmaru is a better com system so that she can coordinate people. Her first fight between space ships actually has her improvise a weapon out of solar sails after the initial hacking attempt fails to shut down the enemy weapons.
Why do I want to play this character?
I want to bring her to Ten Forward for a couple of reasons. First, for training in things like sciences that her work at home wouldn't let her focus on. Second, to help some of the more 20th century ground bound characters adapt to space and fun things like microgravity. Space is beautiful, and Marika can't think of being in space as being anything but incredible and worth sharing.
Also, a small part of me thinks it would be hilarious if she could raise a crew and go adventuring in this new galaxy, or someone else's.
Character skills
Marika's skills include training with projectile and energy weapons (mostly lasers), basic unarmed combat training, literacy in English and Japanese, microgravity maneuvering, vacsuit training and also waitressing. Most of the things you would need to command a space ship, if not maintain or run it, and lead the crew in raids or other small scale combat, or be a part time watiress while finishing high school.

OOC: Planet names and other points of interest in interstellar space

Sea of the Morning Star: Home of Marika and one of the most habitable planets found by humans. Also the center of the old rebellion that saw Letters of Marque issued to bolster military forces which could be raised at the time. Third planet, counting out from Tau Ceti.

Sand of the Red Star: The next planet out from Sea of the Morning Star in the Tau Ceti system.
